19-year-old Mercy left Effijase to Accra to hawk sugarcane because of financial difficulties. Her aim is to continue her education to a higher level but her mother struggles to pay her fees.
Mercy said her mother couldn’t pay her admission fee for her entry into Senior High school though she has passed the Basic Education Certificate Examination successfully. She said her mum asked her to trade so that she will support her with the little she has raised to be able to pay the fees.
The Junior High School graduate said the difficulty to get a job with her academic qualification made her sell sugarcane on commission. Mercy said she is not spared of hunger if she is not able to make enough sales to meet her target.
“I live with my madam and sell for her. I get my commission after selling enough of the sugarcane for that day. Sometimes when I am unable to hit the target up to madam’s profit I reduce the price so that I will get more customers to patronise because the sugarcane will go bad by the end of the day. If I don’t make enough sales to buy food, I chew some of the sugar cane when I am hungry.” She told crimecheckghana.
Mercy said she wishes to attend a vocational school to acquire skills to become self-employed.
She was grateful for the support. “May God grant your heart desires. May He also grant your son with the wisdom to pass his exams.” She prayed.
CCF is appealing to the public to come to the aid of Mercy to realize her dreams.
