31-year-old Sophia Koji would have had at least a better life if she had not been disappointed by the different men she has four children with.
Koji who thought she would get support from the men, told crimecheckghana that she now has to struggle to cater for the children alone with the meagre sales she makes from hawking sweets, a business she does on credit.
‘’The fathers of my children have been irresponsible so I have taken my mind off them. We have been starving because the day I do not make enough sales to meet my target for the day, I give my savings to my master. Most of my items are finished but I won’t be given any if I don’t make previous payment.” She said.
A frustrated Koji said she had to give up on the case when she reported the men to the Women and Juvenile Unit, WAJU due to hindrances in the processes to get justice. ‘I sent the first man to WAJU (Women and Juvenile Unit) but later I dropped the case because of the stress involved. I felt it was unnecessary to continue.” She argued.
The mother of four said her health has deteriorated because she is unable to buy drugs so she has resorted to self-treatment at home. “My eyes have been affected so they ache. I went to the hospital and spent my savings on initial treatment but I haven’t seen any improvement. Now, getting further treatment has become difficult. I have been inhaling a herbal medicine that helps to reduce the pains.” She said.
Compounding her woes, Koji said her landlord of the wooden kiosk she lives in with her children, has been hostile towards her because she refused his proposal to have amorous relationship with her.
Family support
Miss Koji said she is the only person among her siblings who has been striving to make a living. She said her father refused to take care of them and since her mother died she has been at war with life as no relative has been supportive.
