A United Nations Eminent Peace Ambassador, Dr. Kofi Danso has paid for the release of a two-week-old convict from the Kumasi Central Prison in the Ashanti Region.
Identified as a petty offender, Hamidu Bukari was jailed for four months for stealing a mobile phone in a village near Ejura.
“The phone belonged to one of the boys in the area. The victim has put the phone on charge at home and I stole it when I was passing through the house,” Hamidu said.
According to Hamidu, he was a herdsman who could not buy a phone after his old handset went missing. Life, he said was difficult for him.
“The herd owner does not pay me. I am only given upkeep sometimes,” he said.
Hamidu said he was arrested by the police and put before the court.
The now ex-convict was fined Four Hundred and Fifty Ghana cedis which he could not pay.
This resulted in his imprisonment after the presiding judge directed that he get punished to serve as a caution.
“The judge said he will punish me so that I will not go back to steal He sentenced me to 4 months,” Inusah said.
Just two weeks into Hamidu’s imprisonment, philanthropist, Dr. Kofi Danso came to his rescue.
The Peace Ambassador contributed to Crime Check Foundation’s prime television programme ‘Time With The Prisoner’ to collaborate to get out of prison, petty offenders, many of whom are underprivileged and marginalized.
More petty offenders will gain their freedom as he has promised further support to the programme in a bid to decongest the prisons.
The TV series is used to caution the general public against crime.
