“I and my children are blind. My late parents were also blind. After my husband died, I met a man who decided to live with me because of the sympathy he had for me. We have been starving and struggling with accommodation. Life has been tough for us”.
That is the sad story of a widow, Comfort Adu who was born blind by her blind parents and also gave birth to two blind children.
Unlucky as the blind family was, the poor widow said a medical doctor who was a friend to her husband died in the course of treating her two children. She said her husband also died later making her unable to get medical care for them.
“When my husband was alive, he took the oldest child to a friend who was a medical doctor. He was fortunate to have one of his eyes treated by the doctor pending treatment for the other eye. Sadly, the doctor and the treatment went bad.” She told crimecheckghana.
The widow said since then, life has been tough for her as she struggles to feed her children. She said out of sympathy, a man decided to live with her in order to support her though life has been difficult for him too.
Madam Adu said co-tenants in the house they live do not tolerate them because they have not renewed their rent for over four years. She said due to the difficulties, she washes people’s clothes with the help of her only fully sighted daughter to be able to feed her family despite her condition.
“Even after my husband’s death, none of my relatives have bothered to find out how we are faring. I have to wash people’s clothes and get paid 7ghc at the end of the day to be able to buy food. Because of my disability I find it very difficult so my daughter helps me to do the washing. It is not easy.” She said.
Crime Check Foundation, CCF, through its donors, supported her with a business capital of One Thousand Five Hundred Ghana Cedis.
