27 year old, Ama Webaporra who hails from Navrongo in the Northern Region of Ghana tastes the bitter side of life after her failed marriage ruined her life and making to her struggle to fend for her children who have to hunt for food from the garbage because of starvation.
The mother of five who had originally decided to come to the city to find a better life rather had her living condition worsened as she has to sell empty cans and pure water sachets before she can get food on her table. Narrating her story to crimecheckghana, Ama said because life was tough for her, the only way she could survive was to hook onto a man for support. She said the man she found was not from the same religion as hers so it created tension between her and her lover’s family who demanded that until she denounces her religion for theirs they will not allow her boyfriend to marry her.
“When I came to Kumasi, life was not easy for me at all so I had to find a man who would support me. I am a Christian and the man I met was a Muslim so he asked me to join his religion but because I am staunch member of my religion I declined. As time went on, anytime my boyfriend took me to his home his family members would drive me away telling me they won’t allow their son marry me unless I join them in their religion.” She said.
Disheartened Ama said during her relationship with her boyfriend, she bore him five children who have become her only responsibility. She said because of financial difficulties she struggles to cater for the children as she makes meager sales from selling the empty cans and pure water sachets that she picks from refuse dumps. The poor lady said when she is away to pick the cans and sachets, her children starve and because of that they also go about hunting for junk food to eat. “I am not happy that my children eat junk food from the garbage but I am helpless because I don’t have money to give them to buy food when I am not home. It is because of the torment that my boyfriend’s family subjected me to that is why I am suffering this way. Now he is with another lady and has refused to take care of the children.” She narrated.
Crime Check Foundation, CCF through one of its US based group donors, Champion Believers Chapel International gave Ama Five Hundred Ghana Cedis for her upkeep as it counts on the support of kind individuals to enable the poor lady get an established business to cater for her children.
Ama thanked CCF and its donor for reaching out to her. “God bless you and replenish what you have donated to me. May your business grow, may you never lack so that you can continue to help those in need.” She prayed.
