Two armed robbers have been killed during a shootout with the police in Sawla in the Savannah Region.
The deceased were among a gang of robbers who engaged the police in a gun battle on Sunday dawn but the police overpowered them leading to the death of the two with other accomplices who managed to flee.
According to the Police, the shootout ensued following a distress call it received about a robbery attack at Weichao, a suburb of Sawla.
The Police with the help of some community members immediately responded and pursued the suspects who were on motorbikes.
The police identified one of the bodies when they found a COVID-19 vaccinated card with the name Yussif Bolii, aged 20.
The other body of the deceased is however yet to be identified.
Meanwhile, both bodies have been conveyed to the Damongo Hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy while the Sawla Police Command in partnership with the chiefs and community members work to get the remaining suspects believed to have sustained gunshots wounds arrested.
In a statement signed by the Ghana Police Public Affairs Director, ACP Kofi Ofori, the incident happened at Kalba on December 12.
“The Sawla Police in the Savannah Region have shot dead two suspected armed robbers while the other accomplices escaped during a shootout with the Police in Kalba, this dawn, Sunday, December 12, 2021.”
Part of the statement also read that, ‘the suspects engaged the Police in a shootout leading to the death of the two suspects. However, others managed to escape through the bushes.’
“We want to assure the people of Sawla-Tuna-Kalba that adequate security measures are being functioned to protect them from these notorious robbers,” the statement indicated.
