The Ghana Police Service has revealed with details the cause of violence that erupted on the streets of Nima in Accra on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
It took the timely intervention of the police to avert the escalation of the bloodshed clash in which young men were seen wielding machetes amid the firing of gunshots.
Speaking at a press conference, the Director of Public Affairs for the Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori said the clash is linked to a longstanding dispute between two known thugs in the area describing it as ‘gangsterism’ and mass violence.
“It is led by one Kumordzi alias Ibrahim Hussein and Baboon alias Awudu. They are known rivalry groups that never agreed on issues and today they went all out on the open streets of Nima,” he said.
“The intervention force had to manage the situation carefully. They have managed to stabilize the situation. Seven people have been arrested, five are currently present here with us, and the other two are on admission under police guard.”
“That suggests that they are under arrest. Again, we are pursuing the criminals in and around Nima and its environs to make sure that we get them arrested to enable them to face justice,” he added.
ACP Kwesi Ofori revealed that the Police have retrieved some ammunition used by irate youth used to cause harm and danger.
“We’ve retrieved some important items, clues, and evidence on the streets; notably, some spent ammunition, some ammunition, and adapted elements to cause harm and injury,” he said.
