17 year old Abigail Desewu, a resident of Addeiso in the Eastern region of Ghana tells crimecheckghana of how she has been waiting patiently for her one year old daughter, Peace to die.
The young lady was accompanied by a middle aged woman called Janet, who tells crimecheckghana that she is an evangelist and also a mother to Abigail’s friend. According to Janet, her daughter came to her asking if a river is capable of creating a ‘being’ in a womb. She said upon asking her why that question, she went ahead to tell her that her friend Abigail has a year and three months old daughter who hasn’t been able to walk neither does she sleep.
Evangelist Janet said when her daughter told her that, she requested that they bring the child to her. “I believed the child could be sick and would need medical attention so I told my daughter to call her to bring the child so I see for myself. When they brought the child, they told me they had not fed her nor given her water for five days so I quickly went to buy coconut water and gave it to the child”.
The mother of the child, Abigail said when she and her mother realized that the child was not sleeping anymore and was always crying, they took her to a church and the pastor asked them to go and bury the child because such children are cursed. “The pastor said my child has been sent by a river to frustrate and kill my mother so it is better we let her die or bury her. I believed what the pastor said so when we came home, we just left her so she can die on her own”.
When Abigail was asked of the whereabouts of her child’s father, she said the man has refused to take care of the child because of her disability. Abigail said she feels sad when she sees her child but because of what the pastor said, she had to look on unconcerned and watch her baby die slowly.
The Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation CCF, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng during the interview asked Abigail if she was sure of her sanity as a human being and as a matter of fact, a mother. Abigail said she was very sane and was just following the words of the pastor but when she brought the child to Evangelist Janet, she has come to agree with her that her daughter’s condition needs medical attention rather.
As part of CCF’s Health Check series, the Foundation through one of its Belgium based group donors, Happy Yourself, donated an amount of three hundred Ghana cedis (equivalence of fifty Euro) to Evangelist Janet to quickly take the child to the hospital and furnish the Foundation with the information from Doctors as it would be on standby to follow up on the child’s health condition.
Crime Check Foundation is appealing to the general public to come on board to support one year old Peace financially to undergo all medical processes to help her walk and also sleep.
