29-year-old Memuna Malik has had her face, chest and parts of her left hand disfigured after a wicked lady called Salomay, poured a substance believed to be acid on her face at Riyad, a city in Saudi Arabia in the Asian continent.
Memuna explained that the unfortunate incident happened to her on the 24th of December, 2018 after she closed from work and decided to go and braid her hair at one Rabi’s hair salon which is also Rabi’s residence. “As Rabi was braiding my hair, she stopped to go and eat. As she was eating, we heard a knock on her door and she asked me to help her open it. As soon as I opened the door all I saw was someone pushed me and poured a substance on me. That was my end”. She said sobbing.
The totally deformed young lady said as she was being moved to the hospital by the Ghana Youth Association members in the area, she couldn’t see anything but could hear voices. According to her, 3 hospitals in Riyad rejected her claiming they couldn’t help her situation so it was the fourth hospital that accepted to attend to her.
The acid victim said she was later informed that the culprit, Salomay have had a fight with Rabi over an apartment and had decided to teach Rabi a great lesson in life. “Later on, the Ghana Embassy in Saudi Arabia informed me that I wasn’t the lady’s target but rather my hairdresser Rabi, who had had a fight with her days before. They played a voice message from Salomay to one other Ghanaian lady saying she was going to Rabi’s house to teach her a lesson”. She told crimecheckghana.
Miss Malik who now looks totally different said she has undergone three major surgeries where some part of her thigh skin was cut to do skin grafting on her face to at least correct her face shape.
According to her she had to return home because her condition wasn’t getting better as she has partially lost her sight and could barely see a thing. “I had to come back home 3 months ago because I couldn’t see anything talk less of going to work to cater for myself. Rabi too visited me only twice and have never visited again. I returned to Ghana without a pin. Here I am without even a pesewa to go to the hospital because I still feel pains and sick always”.
Memuna’s mother, Hajia Safia who was sobbing since the interview started said it was very difficult when she first saw her daughter after the incident. “It wasn’t easy for me at all when I even saw pictures of my daughter. She is all I’ve got in my life. She travelled to go and seek greener pastures to support the family and see what has happened to her”. The teary mother told crimecheckghana.
Memuna shared her one experience that made her extremely sad. “one day my mother wasn’t well so I decided to wash our clothes and go dry them outside. As I was drying the things, two children that were standing by were having a conversation and one told the other that- you see this sister her face is really scary and looks like a monster. She said upon hearing that she became very sad and felt she was no more part of human beings”. She said with tears rolling down her cheeks.
As she has to be moving about with a scarf covering her face all the time, the young lady said she has had several thoughts of killing herself and ending it all because when she looks at her face in the mirror she has no hope of life. “I have wished severally that I kill myself because even the people around me sometimes say if this had happened to them they would have killed themselves but since I didn’t die after the 3 surgeries, I knew God needs me alive”. Memuna said this weeping.
Speaking to Memuna, the Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation, CCF, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng advised and encouraged Memuna to keep up the faith she has had in God and believe that all will be well.
Meanwhile, the culprit Salomay is alleged to have been arrested but Memuna says she has no evidence that truly the lady has been arrested.
As part of CCF’s Health Check Series, an amount of Four thousand Ghana cedis was presented to Memuna to help her start her medical process with immediate effect. This donation was made possible by six of the Foundation’s group and individual donors: Madam Linda Owusu (Holland), Ama Yeboah Addae(US), Asanteman Secondary School 1998 batch (US), Colombus Ghanaian SDA Church (Colombus Ohio), Zumunta Frauen (a group of Muslim women in Germany) and Manerbio Muslim Association (Brescia- Italy).
In addition to the cash donation was some foodstuff from an Italy based donor, Madam Cynthia Amponsah.
Memuna shed tears and blessed her donors as she received the cash and foodstuff. “God bless you all so much, may you never lose your jobs and I pray God protects you all. I know that even if my life is not spared and God calls me home, you will still be blessed”.
