37year old Seth Saafi who lives at Kanawu in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana laments how his mother’s illness has caused him to go through financial difficulties.
In an interview with crimecheckghana, Seth said he received a call 2years ago that his mother who was in the Volta Region was not feeling well. He said he brought her to Accra so that he could properly take care of her. “A stranger one day called me and told my mother was not feeling well and has been abandoned by her family members. They also moved her from her room to an uncompleted building which is far away from the town.” He said.
According to him, after taking her mother to a nearby hospital, she was diagnosed of stroke and was referred to Korle- Bu Teaching hospital for proper medical care. “When we went to the hospital, the doctor said my mother’s illness has advanced and needs to be taken to Korle-Bu. Before this, I had spent a lot at the hospital and I had no money to take her to Korle-Bu so I brought her home. She only depends on the medication given to her at the hospital which sustains her for a while”. Seth told crimecheckghana.
He said he was a shop assistant at a pharmacy but was sacked because of divided attention between work and his mother. “My mother cannot do anything so I have to bath and feed her every morning before going to work which used to delay me. I also had to close from work early to come home to feed her and also clean her up. My boss could not keep up with that so he sacked me”. He said.
Seth further disclosed that he being the only child of his mother, he has sold all his belongings after losing his job so that he can afford the medication and some basic needs of his mother. He says the financial difficulty he is going through has led to a situation where his landlady is threatening to eject them since his rent is due.
The development has pushed Seth to appeal for support: “I am pleading with the public to help my mother get back on her feet. I cannot move out to do any work because she needs my assistance all the time. If she gets back on her feet, I can freely work to cater her and myself”.
Crime Check Foundation’s Health Check Series aims at supporting individuals who need medical assistance but are financially handicapped. The Project with the support of donors has saved the lives of many poor and underprivileged Ghanaians who cannot afford the cost of medical care.
