Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, a journalist with Ghana’s State Broadcasting Corporation was declared the Best Crime and Court Reporter for the year 2018 at the 24th Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) Awards ceremony held at the Gold Coast Kempinski Hotel on 23rd November 2019.
In a citation accompanying the award, Mr. Kwarteng, was praised for his dexterity. Mr. Kwarteng is the Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation, an NGO which seeks to sensitize the public to the dangers of crime through the screening of life in prison, documentaries in schools, churches, mosques, communities and other trouble spots in Ghana.
He has done several documentaries on the state of Ghana Prisons, including “Inside Prison”, “Prisons Agriculture” and “A neglected potential” which exposes infractions of the law and the deplorable conditions in most of Ghana’s prisons.
Mr. Kwarteng, is the Host and Producer of first-ever prisons TV Series in Ghana dubbed “Time with the Prisoner”, a one on one interview program with prisoners.
Mr. Kwarteng was hailed at the awards ceremony for using Journalism to impact society by exposing the ills in Ghana’s Criminal Justice System.
As a Prisons Ambassador Extraordinaire, Mr. Kwarteng has used the position conferred on him by the Ghana Prison Service to give hope to a number of prisoners and in some cases helped to liberate them from the shackles of the law.
He highlights the deplorable conditions in Ghana’s prisons and seeks public support to improve infrastructure and welfare of prisoners.
Mr. Kwarteng is a Chevening Scholar, having won the award in 2016 to study for a Master in International Journalism at Brunel University, London, has been with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation for 12yrs and is currently a Chief Editor. He is also a member of the Association of European Journalists, AEJ.
Forty three year old Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng is the lead presenter of GBC’s flagship programme ‘Behind the News’, which is aired on primetime radio on week days from 2000 GMT to 2100 GMT and is listened to all over the country.
His rich, silky voice on radio and his writing skills are what endear him to his listeners.
In his resolve to help educate the public on Ghana’s laws and statues, Mr. Kwarteng broadcasts his flagship programme, ‘Time with the Prisoner’ on one of GTVs channels and on UTV, a private television station in the Akan language and watched by thousands of viewers and it’s telecast every Friday.
Mr. Kwarteng has done extensive research on child Labor in Ghana. Not only that, he has several documentaries and feature article on good practices and lessons learnt on ECOWAS I&II to enhance elimination of child labor in Ghana.
He is acknowledged worldwide and has received several International awards.
The work of Mr. Kwarteng goes beyond the shores of Ghana. He has interviewed many British Politicians including then former UK secretary of state for international Development, Justice Greening, Former UN Metropolitan commissioner of police, Logan Howe, former Mayor of Merton, Agartha Akyigyina, the Spiritual Head, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadzrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Mayor of Hillingdom, John Henseley and many more.
He is a past student of T.I Ahmadiyya High School, Kumasi. He holds a BA in English from University of Cape Coast, an M.A in English from University of Ghana, and an M.A in International Journalism from Brunel University, London.
