Hundreds of supporters Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC have massed up at the Headquarters of the Electoral Commission, EC ahead of the declaration of the Presidential results at the just ended polls.
The supporters allege the EC wants to manipulate the results hence its delay in the declaration, “We know our candidate has won so why are they delaying the declaration? We are here to tell the EC to declare our candidate as the winner”, they claimed.
The EC had promised to declare the Presidential results in 24 hours but it says it had to extend the time due to some delays in collation in some constituencies.
The 2020 General Election has been praised by many to be generally free and fair. However, it has witnessed some pockets of violence in some areas.
One of such major violent incidents recorded was in the Odododiodoo Constituency where two people are said to have been injured leading to the arrest of the Member of Parliament for the area, Nii Lantey Vnaderpuye who has since been released.
According to eyewitnesses, some supposed New Patriotic Party, NPP supporters were moving towards the residence of the MP in jubilation when a gunshot was fired to disperse the crowd. The eyewitness said it led to the injury of two persons including a woman.
“We were only jubilating because our candidate has won and then the NDC people started hurling weapons at us. Our campaign car has been damaged and the two persons who have been injured have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.” he said.
In the Central Region, a middle-aged man was also reported to have been shot dead after he tried to escape with a ballot box.
Election observers, the Coalition of Domestic Elections Observers, CODEO and the European Union have hailed the peaceful and transparent manner in which the election has been conducted despite the isolated incidents of violence.
