Accra, Feb. 26, GNA – The Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation, Mr Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police to help identify one Alhassan, a policeman, who allegedly assaulted Ebenezer Quaye, a prisoner, resulting in his blindness.
According to Mr Kwarteng, the convict said the policeman, who was stationed at the police headquarters, battered his face with wire and supervised the persistent punching of his eyes by his alleged step brother whiles in custody at the police headquarters.
Mr Kwarteng, who is also the Ambassador Extraordinaire of Prisons and also a journalist with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, said the assault has completely blinded the prisoner.
He told the GNA that the Medical Officer at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Dr. Lawrence Acheampong has confirmed that the inmate was virtually blind and may have to be flown to South Africa for special treatment to have any chance of seeing again.
He said the inmate, whom, he interviewed, as part of his ‘Time with the prisoner’ series’ described the said Alhassan as “thick and tall”, but he would not be able to identify him because he was blind now.
The inmate, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence, according to Mr Kwarteng, also claims, he was handcuffed for three days whiles in custody.
He said the use of brute force on accused persons by some police personnel in cases they could have handled professionally, does not only infringe on their human rights, but makes mockery of Ghana’s designation as a beacon of democracy in the sub-region.
He has therefore charged the police administration to immediately investigate and bring to book all those whose actions contributed to the blindness of Mr Quaye.
