The 18-year-old mother of the baby, Rebecca Nyarko has not been herself since the incident on July 26, 2023.
Rebecca gave birth at the prayer camp where the leader of the camp took delivery of babies.
Narrating how the child was stolen, told crimecheckghana.org she said she was sleeping in the same room at the camp with her newborn baby and her first child.
In that same room was an usher in the church who usually is responsible for locking up the door when they go to sleep at night.
“On that fateful day, the usher slept without closing the door,” she recounted.
Rebecca said she tried to wake the usher up to lock the door because she did not know how to do it. The usher ignored her claiming he was ill.
She also went to bed and then the thief came at night and stole the baby.
“I woke up around 11 pm to check up on my baby and I found only my elderly daughter. My three-day-old baby was gone,” she cried.
Rebecca said she drew the attention of the camp leader who is also a prophetess.
The prophetess reported the issue to the police and two suspects were arrested.
However, the prophetess paid for the release of one of the suspects who had visited her on the day the baby got missing at the camp.
“Though I knew the man who visited the prophetess, she did not allow her to come to see me. I was told that man is a herbalist and I did not know why he came to see the prophetess that same day my baby was taken away,” he recounted.
“The second suspect was the man I was in the same room at the camp. He was not bailed so my boyfriend and I got him bailed.
Rebecca said in the course of the search for her baby, a local TV station reported that a fresh baby had been dumped in a bush at Ofankor.
“When I saw the picture of the baby, I realized it was mine,” she said.
But unfortunately for her, she said when she contacted the station, she was told the baby had been taken to Fetteh Kakraba Hospital, also in the Central Region.
She followed up to the hospital but a picture of another baby was shown to her.
“I demanded to enter the wards to see if my baby was there but the nurses prevented me. The prophetess was also pushing me to accept the different child as mine but I insisted on stance that it was not mine. My baby was hairy but what they showed me at the hospital did not have any hair,” she recalled.
Rebecca said the prophetess washed her hands off the case when she refused to accept the other child at the hospital as hers.
“The prophetess said if I did not accept that baby then there is nothing she could do to help me,” she said.
Since then their efforts in finding their baby have been in futility. “We do not have money to get the necessary authorities involved to help us find our baby.
Rebecca Nyarko and her boyfriend, Seth Akyem are appealing to the relevant authorities to help them get justice.
