The headmaster of St Charles Lwanga Roman Catholic Junior High School in the Saboba District of the Northern Region Emmanuel Changer is expected to appear in court today, November 15 over the death of some nine students in his school.
Seven bodies were initially retrieved on the first day. A search team continued to the following day where two more bodies were also retrieved.
The students, while returning from the headmaster’s farm in a boat after they had gone to harvest his rice on Friday, November 12 had their vessel capsized.
Confirming the incident, The Saboba District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shine Zokoiku said the eight bodies have been retrieved while three of them are still missing. A search team continued the following day where two more bodies were also retrieved.
He said twenty of them who were able to swim ashore were rescued.
“The headteacher has been charged with manslaughter and will be arraigned before court tomorrow (Monday),” ASP Zokoiku said.
He said the case will be expedited. “We are doing the best we can to bring finality to this matter as soon as possible because of the gravity of it,”
ASP Zokoiko indicated that, Mr. Changer is been charged for manslaughter.
In March this year, the country was thrown into a state of mourning when eleven teenagers drowned while swimming in the sea at Apam in the Central Region.
A total of thirteen bodies were retrieved where about 20 children were said to be involved in the tragic accident.
Also in October, at least four young people died when their boat capsized on River Offin in the Ashanti Region. Their bodies were pulled from the river after nearly three days of searching for those missing.
