The Suhum police have arrested a 32-year-old man, Tanko Sani who posed as an army officer and duped one Richmond Ohene Addo.
The ‘soldier’ duped Addo of Two Thousand Eight Hundred Ghana cedis under the pretext of getting him enlisted into the Ghana Army.
Sani was arrested on Monday, November 8, 2021.
According to the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the suspect will be put before court once the police conclude their investigations.
Mr. Tetteh urged the public to desist from paying bribes to get their way to be recruited into any security institution because criminals take advantage of persons desperate to be enlisted into any of the security services.
“Suspect Saani Tanko was arrested and is currently assisting the police in investigation. The police would want to advise all persons who have interest in joining any of the security services that they should not fall prey to such criminals who go around and parade themselves as persons who can assist in whatever way to help them join the service.”
“They should not part with any money because these people are common criminals who are preying around looking for people to take advantage of because of the desperation of such prospective applicants to be enlisted by all means,” he said.
A few months ago, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and other security agencies held a recruitment exercise for new personnel.
The exercise saw thousands of young people throng various allocated centres by the security services to undertake documentation and medical screening processes for the new personnel. GAF held theirs at the El-Wak Sports Complex.
Senior High School graduates, diploma, and degree holders showed up for the exercise hopeful to be recruited.
In a crimecheckghana.org publication on July, 15, a police instructor at the Tesano Police Training School, popularly referred to as ‘Airborne’ defrauded a tomatoes seller of Five Thousand Ghana cedis (GHS 5000.00) in what appears to be a recruitment scam into the police service.
According to the victim, a 30-year-old Adofowaa Faustina, a native of Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region, one of her friends introduced her to ‘Airborne’ after convincing her that he had assisted her to join the service. Eager to be recruited into the service, the SHS graduate said she did not think twice when Airborne demanded Five Thousand Ghana cedis (GHS 5000.00). She hurriedly took ‘a loan’ from a market association she belongs to in her quest to fulfill her long-cherished dream to join the Ghana Police Service.
The police administration responded to her plight to retrieve her money after the story was circulated in the media.
