To express her profound gratitude to the Ghana Prison Service, Christiana Atsupie Twasam has paid a courtesy call on its Director General, Isacc Egyir.
The visit was to show appreciation to the Prison Services for its support during the funeral of her late twin, Christian Atsu Twasam.
“The show of love and support before, during, and even after the funeral of my late twin is much appreciated. My family and I are grateful for the unwavering support shown” she said.
The late footballer advocated for the passage of an alternative sentencing bill.
Before his untimely death, he partnered with crime prevention advocates, Crime Check Foundation to champion the passage of the bill.
Atsu through the Foundation’s Petty Offenders Project released 114 prisoners and reintegrated others with seed capitals.
“Atsu believed in people, he was always ready to give people a second chance, and that greatly influenced his work with the Prison Service” Atsupie detailed.
To continue the humanitarian work of her twin, Atsupie hinted at launching the Christian Atsu Foundation, a foundation that will mainly focus on the well-being of inmates and officers.
“Atsu started a good work and now that he is no more, I believe the baton has been passed on to me. So, to continue his work, we will launch a foundation in his name and partner with Crime Check Foundation to support the service and any other project he started” she added.
Receiving the grieving twin, the Director General of Prison, Isaac Egyir, extolled the values of the late Christian Atsu and his relationship with inmates and officers.
He pledged his unwavering support for the proposed foundation.
“You can count on our support whenever you are ready to continue from where your brother left off,” he said.
Recounting fond memories of Atsu, Mr. Egyir said during his days as Officer in Charge at Nsawam Prison, the late footballer visited and for the next subsequent days, he was the topic of discussions among officers and inmates
“This tells the kind of man he was, gentle, kind-hearted, and compassionate of others” he added
On his part, the Director General of Crime Check Foundation, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, promised his readiness to help the Christian Atsu Foundation in any way it can
“CCF will support the Atsu Foundation by providing visibility that it needs. Atsu started a good work and we need to continue his legacy” he said at the Ghana Prison Service Headquarters on March 31, 2023.
Christian Atsu died while trapped under debris after an earthquake hit Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6, 2023.
He was buried in his hometown, Ada on March 17, 2023.
