Chaos has characterized the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constituency elections which kick off today.
Four delegates have so far been arrested for attempts to stall the party’s elections underway in Okaikwei South.
The governing party’s constituency election which is scheduled for April 28 to May 2, 2022, is to elect new executives to fill up various positions at the constituency level.
In the Okaikwei South Constituency, some delegates threatened to halt processes that would see to a successful election.
The aggrieved persons claim over four hundred and thirty (430) names have been deleted from the register.
They argue that those affected should not be prevented from voting.
In view of this, the delegates massed up on the road, blocking the vehicle of the Electoral Commission (EC) officials being escorted by the police from gaining access to the voting grounds.
The Police then intervened. This resulted in fisticuff between some of the police officials and the delegates.
Some delegates resorted to pelting stones to prevent the Police from ensuring the election takes place.
The Police resisted and in the end, four of the delegates were picked up.
The vehicle conveying the EC officials finally gained access to the Prince of Peace School at Bubuashi.
The EC officials have set up to commence the NPP constituency elections.
Meanwhile, delegates with accreditation have been allowed entry with caution that they remain non-violent.
“When the album was brought, I went to the exhibition and did not see my name in it. I am fighting for my right and will not allow the elections to be held until they bring the old album. The matter is in court; so, if they will not obey the court orders but go-ahead to hold the elections, they must as well kill all of us.
“I vote at the Prince of Peace polling station. They earlier told us they would maintain all delegates and where necessary, add new ones – we agreed. Our request for the album was declined on several occasions. It was only yesterday that our leaders got it from the Region, only for us to realize that 413 delegates’ names have been taken out,” some of the delegates told the media.
