Crime Check Foundation (CCF) has supported two stranded mothers at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) unit for their inability to pay for the use of incubators by their pre-matured babies.
The mothers, Afari Gloria, 29, and Akosua Vidza, 34 told crimecheckghana that upon the advice of doctors, they had to undergo Cesarean Sections to enable them to give birth due to pregnancy complications.
“My pregnancy was only seven months when doctors recommended that I undergo CS because of high blood pressure. After delivery, my baby was put in an incubator. The baby is fine now and we have been discharged but we are unable to pay for the use of the incubator. That is why we are still here at the hospital,” Gloria said.
According to Vidza, ‘while I was pregnant, I was diagnosed of high blood pressure which doctors said could damage my kidney. They then recommended that I undergo CS if not I could lose my life through childbirth.’
An incubator provides controlled environmental conditions to a premature or sick baby. It provides these preemies with ideal conditions, as the babies may be lacking skin integrity and body fat, and are not able to regulate their body temperature.
The incubator also protects babies from infections, excessive light, and sound, all of which might harm them, as the babies are extremely sensitive and have low immunity. With humidity control and special lights, the incubator is also helpful in treating neonatal jaundice issues, which is common in newborn babies.
It is estimated that about eight thousand seven hundred pre-mature babies die due to lack of incubators. Many patients also lose their lives because of their inability to afford proper medical care, a reason Crime Check Foundation embarks on its visits to health facilities to offer a helping hand.
With support from one of its anonymous donors, CCF gave Gloria and Vidza a total of Nine Hundred and Thirty Ghana cedis to pay off their debt.
The mothers expressed their gratitude to the Foundation and its donors. “God bless you and replace what you have given us in multiple folds.” They said.
