Breast cancer patients have been advised not to take a break in treatment as that poses dire consequences.
A Senior Clinical Psychologist at the Department of Surgery of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Rita Appiah-Dankwa gave the advice during a Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) counseling programme organized for patients of the disease at its offices.
Madam Appiah-Dankwa indicated the worrying trend where some patients relax on receiving further treatment after a little improvement in their condition.
Madam Appiah-Dankwa who also doubles as the Psychologist for the Breast Cancer Unit of the hospital ‘when you break treatment and do not continue with other treatments, the disease will gather momentum and hit back strongly’.
She said the disease would likely attack other organs in the body after a break.
“Undergoing surgery alone is not enough. Make sure you complete all the treatment because it is a journey you have to endure,” she added.
She urged the patients not to be discouraged but to brace themselves up to fight for their lives.
“Do not speak to people who will tell you that since you have cancer you are good as dead. Be encouraged and endure the treatment,” she said.
The Executive Director of Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF), Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng indicated that the Foundation will organize the counseling session every two months for the patients to keep their hopes alive.
“We will bring more experts in this field at least every two months to talk to you. This will help you to be encouraged while undergoing treatment and also give you bits about the dos and don’ts associated with the disease,” he said.
Meena Breast Cancer Foundation has been fighting the disease every day with its sensitization and breast screening exercises for communities, schools, and corporate and religious institutions.
MBCF was founded on the vision of Mrs Amina Oppong Kwarteng, the spouse of Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng who is also the Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation.
