Nine students of the Christian Methodist Senior High School at Kasoa in the Central Region have been identified with suspected cancer lumps.
The students were noticed during a Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF)-organized breast cancer screening exercise for staff and students of the school.
The exercise saw a massive turnout after an engaging educative interaction with the participants on breast cancer.
More than two hundred and fifty students and staff participated in the exercise.
The leading medical officer of the MBCF team, Dorothy Denkyi, a Midwife with the Tema General Hospital used the opportunity to caution the students against the use of contraceptives.
“Don’t allow yourselves to be used by the boys and then ask you to take in contraceptives. You risk contracting breast cancer if you use them,” she said.
The Executive Director of Meena Breast Cancer Foundation, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng suggested immediate investigations of the students affected by the suspected lumps.
He urged school authorities to constantly seek medical check-ups for students to secure their future.
“The school authority should inform parents of the condition of the affected students for them to take the responsibility of getting them further medical attention. Schools must also get students health check-ups,” he encouraged.
The Senior House Mistress of the Christian Methodist Senior High School, Francisca Abena Adansi thanked MBCF for the exercise, which she described as life-saving.
“We would not have known that these students were with such lumps in their breasts. We are grateful,” she said.
An Assistant Headmistress of the School, Lami Adeenze also commended the Foundation for its initiative of fighting the disease year-round.
“I must commend you. You are doing a great job for humanity,” she applauded.
The Christian Methodist Senior High School is the 5th second-cycle institution that has benefited from MBCF’s initiative.
Other Senior High Schools that have benefited are the Potsin T.I Ahmadiyya, St. Mary’s, Odorgornno, and Accra Girls.
One basic school, the Odorkor Maclean Basic School has since benefited.
Communities, corporate, and religious institutions have also been reached by MBCF.
Since its establishment a year ago, approximately ten thousand women have been engaged, its Executive Director said.
MBCF was established on the vision of the late Mrs. Amina Oppong Kwarteng, spouse of Mr. Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation and MBCF.
She died of breast cancer in 2022.
