An auto mechanic has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for stealing two bags of maize.
Francis Teye said he stole the maize to sell to enable him to fund his graduation as a mechanic apprentice. His action, he said was borne out of financial difficulties.
In his quest to raise money, Teye told crimecheckghana.org that he managed to secure a job on a farm but his situation did not change. According to him, the farmowner who is also a pastor did not pay him his wages.
“I was starving. The pastor promised he was going to pay me but he never did. Whenever I reminded him, he continued to promise me,” he said.
Teye, who could no longer bear the situation after several months, decided to take the law into his own hands.
He said he stole two huge backs of harvested maize and sold them.
“I sold a bag for eight hundred Ghana cedis and left the farm after the act,’ Teye recounted.
The young man who is currently serving his sentence at the Awutu Camp Prison said the pastor ordered his arrest when he found out about the missing bags of maize.
Teye said he was subsequently arraigned before the court.
The struggling mechanic who needed Two Thousand Five Hundred Ghana cedis to enable him to graduate and start his own business was fined Two Thousand Ghana cedis.
Teye could not afford the fine resulting in his two-year sentence.
