Three volunteers from UK-based non-governmental organization, Arms Around The Child are currently in Ghana on an internship with Crime Check Foundation (CCF) to study the country’s justice delivery system.
Their visit is a collaboration between CCF and Arms Around The Child to foster cooperation to help advance the rights of the underprivileged.
The volunteers will visit law courts to witness how criminal cases are handled in Ghana. They will also visit the prisons to understand Ghana’s reformation and rehabilitation methods.
“Crime Check Foundation in conjunction with Arms Around The Child has a very wonderful collaboration where we have interns across the world, come to Ghana to learn about the criminal justice system,” Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, Executive Director, CCF said.
It will be an opportunity to sell Ghana to the world as the interns will be taught practices in Ghana’s justice delivery for their references when they return to the UK.
“They will learn best practices and challenges confronting Ghana’s criminal justice system and see how best they can sell Ghana on the world map and if possible make recommendations,” Mr. Kwarteng indicated.
The interns, Yasmin Souza Pombo Gusmao, and Dearla Xhika seemed to have found themselves in an environment where empathy is needed. They decried the deplorable nature of Ghana’s prison system. “The prison system is more punitive here,” Yasmin observed.
Jodia Myii is the latest addition to the foreign team as Yasmin leaves for the UK after a week in Ghana.
Crime Check Foundation and Arms Around The Child have been working hand-in-hand to execute late Black Stars player, Christian Atsu’s vision. The Foundation led the commissioning of the Christian Atsu Educational Centre in the Central Region with support from Arms Around The Child.
