A washing bay attendant at Nkawkaw has been jailed for two years for stealing a 32-inch plasma television.
Awudu Razak attempted to steal the TV with his colleague at work to sell it to be able to pay for his rent.
“My rent had expired and my landlord was almost ejecting me. I asked my colleague for help but he said he did not have any money. My friend rather said he was a thief so I could join him to be able to pay for the rent,” he told crimecheckghana.org.
According to him he heeded his friend’s advice and followed him to steal a plasma television.
Unfortunately, they were caught in the act after the victim heard them attempting to steal his mobile phone.
“My friend broke into the victim’s room while he was asleep at night. I stood outside to receive the items. We were able to remove the TV but when we were trying to steal the victim’s mobile phone, he heard the noise and screamed for help when he spotted us,” he narrated.
Razak said he was arrested and put before a court. He said he was jailed for two years when he could not pay a fine of Ten Thousand Ghana cedis.
He said the huge fine was because the victim told the court that we also stole his Fifty-Two Ghana cedis. That he said was not true.
Crime Check Foundation (CCF) met Razak at the Awutu Camp Prison where he is serving his sentence. CCF appeals to the general public to help pay his fine for his release.
This was part of the Foundation’s Time With The Prisoner series through which the general public is cautioned on the consequences of crime.
