Joshua Twasam had attempted to call Christian Atsu on phone when he won the Player of the Year award of the Northumberland Football League, Claire Rupio tells crimecheckghana.org.
“I had to remind him that he couldn’t call his dad because he is late. It was a difficult moment,” Claire Rupio said.
The little boy who is determined to make his late dad proud was recognized for his remarkable performances as his team emerged victorious in the Motive Pro8 tournament’s final held in February 2023.
Sadly, Christian Atsu was absent to cheer up his son. According to Ms. Rupio, after failing to reach his father on phone, Joshua called his uncle in Portugal to break the news to him.
“Joshua has been forgetting that Christian is late and I have to keep reminding him. He called Christian’s brother and told him about his feat. It has not been easy for us since Christian’s death,” she complained.
Ms. Rupio revealed to crimecheckghana.org that they have also been struggling financially.
“It has been difficult since the demise of Christian. We have to contend with financial difficulties,” she moaned.
She said Joshua dedicated the award to his late father.
The Northumberland Football League hosts Mini Soccer and Youth Leagues and programmes in England. It offers opportunities for children and teenagers from all backgrounds to engage in football.
The Northumberland Football Association serves as the governing body of the league.
