Scrap dealer remanded over theft at KNUST

A Kumasi Circuit Court, has remanded a scrap dealer into prison custody over the alleged theft of a power generator.

The theft is said to have taken place at the Ghana Union of Superannuated Senior Staff (GUSSS) Hostel, located on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University Of Science and Technology (KNUST), in Kumasi.

Baba Mohammed, the accused, who resides at Aboabo in Kumasi, pleaded guilty and was ordered to return to the Court, presided over by Madam Mary Nsenkyire, in a week’s time.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Timothy Amoako, told the Court that Pius Amponsah, the Assistant Manager of GUSSS and the complainant in the case, is the owner of the active power diesel grid.

He said the equipment was borrowed by the contractor who constructed the GUSSS mini stadium on the KNUST campus, to serve as a stand- by electricity power source when the facility was being commissioned by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, on 26th April 2019.

Prosecution said on the following morning the accused sent a towing vehicle and carted the machine from the stadium.

Chief Inspector Amoako said the accused when confronted by the stadium workers, told them that he was ordered by the GUSSS manager to covey it to the hostel.

He said the accused then succeeded in transporting the generator to Aboabo – Dagomba line, where he displayed it for sale.

The Prosecution said the complainant later reported the theft to the police and after a manhunt, the accused was later arrested by KNUST BNI officials, who handed him over to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Kumasi.

He said the accused in his cautioned statement confessed to the theft and said the generator was sold to him at GH? 3,000.00 by one Yaw, who is yet to be identified.
