A 26-year-old loading boy, Philip Asamoah has been jailed for ten years for robbery.
The Nkawie Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality convicted him after charging for robbing some gold miners at Kotokuom.
Asamoah and his accomplices who are currently on the run are said to have attacked the gold miners and robbed them of gold, money, mobile phones, and other valuable items.
The court presided over by Nana Brew convicted him on his own plea when he appeared before the court and pleaded guilty.
The prosecution led, by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sylvanus Dalmenda told the court that the incident happened on January 2, this year on the Kotokuom and Kwanfinfi road.
He said the complainants who were members of the Kotokuom Community Mining Scheme, were returning from the mining site when they were suddenly attacked by the convict and his gang with locally manufactured pistols and clubs.
Mr. Dalmenda said they took away mobile phones, raw gold, cash, and other valuable items from the complainants and tied them to some trees, and bolted.
The prosecution said the complainants managed to disentangle themselves and ran to the Kwanfinfi town and reported the issue to the people.
He said some of the youth in the community chased the gang and the convict was arrested and handed over to the Nkawie police.
He was brought before the court after investigations and was sentenced to ten years imprisonment.
CCF’s crime prevention advocacy
Crime Check Foundation (CCF) has introduced programmes including the latest ‘Stay Away From Trouble’ as part of its crime prevention advocacy project.
Through these programmes it has been cautioning the general public against acts that could land them in trouble in a bid to curb crime.
The Foundation screens one-on-one interviews with prison inmates bringing to bare acts that landed them into prison and the difficulties they face in custody.
It has also paid the fines of many petty offenders for their release.
