A 14-year-old Junior High School graduate (name withheld) has been reported pregnant after she was allegedly defiled by an Assistant Headteacher and two other teachers of Twifo Hasowodze D/A JHS in the Twifo Attimorkwa District of the Central Region.
The Assistant Headteacher, Emmanuel Tei Ayertey, and the teachers, Isaac Barns and Cletus Essien admitted to indulging in the act but the School Management Committee (SMC) Chairman, Yaw Asiedu, stepmother of the victim, Adwoa Nkuma, and some committee members of the community connived with the culprits to conceal the issue.
They are said to have negotiated with the perpetrators and charged them to pay Seven Thousand Ghana cedis each but later settled on Five Thousand Ghana cedis of which the embattled teachers have already made down payments of Three Thousand Ghana cedis in fulfillment of the agreement in a bid to cover up the truth.
The SMC Chairman together with the victim’s stepmother and the committee members further went ahead to agree on a monthly payment of One Hundred Ghana cedis from each of the teachers to cater for the welfare of the girl till she delivers.
Meanwhile, the Abusuapanin of the town, Nana Kofi Donkor, who got wind of the story and was disgusted condemned the act and charged the Assembly member of the area, Charles Kwasi Domenyo, to report the case to the police.
He advised parents to monitor the movements of their wards against sex predators and girls should report any sexual harassment to their parents.
“I’m pleading with parents and guardians to be responsible and keep a close eye on their children to avert similar incidents in the future,” he said.
He also cautioned teachers “to desist from such unscrupulous acts as it would cost them their work.”
Police have however started investigations into the case.
