The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old painter and gardener Haruna Iddrisu for unlawfully possessing 228 parcels of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.
According to the Head of Public Affairs Unit, Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Juliana Obeng, on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, the Regional Police gathered that a drug transporting syndicate, on the Police wanted list, had transported some substances, suspected to be Indian Hemp to Accra and had hidden them at a location.
She said surveillance was immediately mounted on their movements, and suspect Haruna Iddrisu, was identified as the main distributor.
DSP Obeng said Police trailed the suspect and succeeded in arresting him at his hideout in Gbetsile, near Ashaiman, together with the 228 slabs of dried leaves, all suspected to be Indian Hemp.
She said investigation into the matter was is currently ongoing and further updates would be communicated.
DSP Obeng warned all criminals to immediately cease their nefarious activities because the Police were poised to come after them.
She also encouraged members of the general public to be vigilant at all times and to provide timely report about suspicious characters or activities to the Police.
CCF’ s advocacy on crime reduction
As a crime reduction advocacy institution, Crime Check Foundation (CCF) continue to introduce programmes with the latest being ‘Stay Away From Trouble’ (a One-one-One interview with prisoners) to caution the general public against the acts that could land them into trouble.
CCF also advocates for the passing of the Non-Custodial Sentencing bill into law to get petty offenders to do community services than serving custodial sentences.
The passage of the bill into law will also help to decongest the prisons.
Through its Petty Offenders project, the Foundation has paid the fine of many petty offenders leading to their release. It has also integrated many ex-convicts into society.
