A 4-year-old boy, Seidu Abdul Gafar requires open-heart surgery to correct a heart condition, pink tetralogy of Fallot (hole-heart) to be able to survive.
In a medical report from the National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital, which Gafar’s father, Seidu Moro presented to Crime Check Foundation (CCF) for support, the surgery would cost Nine Thousand dollars (equivalence of Fifty Thousand, One Hundred and Sixty-Six Ghana cedis).
According to the report, Gafar has a history of ‘delayed developmental milestones and a seizure disorder’. It indicated that diagnostics conducted on him ‘showed a continental heart disease called pink tetralogy of Fallot. The child would need open-heart surgery to correct this defect.’
It says the total cost will cover further investigations, anesthesia, surgery, intensive care, and admission for two weeks.
Moro said the disease causes Gafar to have cessations, which has affected his brain. This he said makes it difficult for the little boy to restrain himself.
“On one particular day, Gafar collapsed nine times and when we took him to the General hospital, doctors found out that there were holes in his heart,” he said.
He said life has been difficult for him as he has not been able to secure a good job to enable him to fund his son’s treatment. “I was driving a school bus but unfortunately it has broken down. I have to do menial construction jobs to be able to fend for the home. My wife sells porridge but she does not make any profit from it so it is left with me to cater for the family,” he said.
Crime Check Foundation (CCF) has paid the medical bills of many struggling patients including those who undergo surgery.
