One person is feared dead and another injured after a deadly collision between two motorbikes with registration numbers GE-21-6841 and M-21-6647 on the N1 highway at McCarthy Junction.
According to an eyewitness, the rider of the M-21-6647 had crossed the traffic light at the McCarthy Junction though it had signaled red. The rider of the motorbike with registration number GE-21-6841 who was also coming from McCarthy Hill to join the main road heading towards the Kwame Nkrumah Circle realizing it was too late crushed into the M-21-6647 resulting in his untimely death.
“The rider on the M-21-6647 realizing the danger ahead of him, jumped off his motor leaving the motor to crush into the deceased’s bike,” he said.
The eyewitness said the deceased had his neck broken and his leg injured.
He said the incident caused heavy traffic at the intersection giving police officers a hectic task to direct the flow of vehicles.
The police have however impounded the two motorbikes.
Motorbike accidents
According to a Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) report, motorcycles continue to increase the country’s road accident fatalities despite having the least number of reported cases of accidents.
The report states that motorcycles accounted for approximately 45% of the total 1,454 fatalities recorded for the half-year of 2021.
The motorcycle deaths for the first half of 2021 was 104 more than the 518 deaths recorded for commercial vehicles and 308 more than the deaths recorded for private vehicles.
The half-year report for 2021 by the MTTD of the Ghana Police Service indicates that 622 motorcycle deaths were recorded from the 3,157 accidents recorded from January to June 2021.
Statistics from the report shows that 2,481 persons were also injured from motorcycle accidents, which is more than the 1,768 injuries reported for private vehicles.
However, the number of victims who were injured through commercial vehicle crashes toppled that of motorcycles and private vehicles as 3,939 injuries were recorded in accidents involving commercial vehicles.
Data from the half-year report also states that accident cases recorded among both commercial and private vehicles, as well as motorcycles, have all increased, compared to the figures recorded for the same period in 2020.
The number of motorcycle accidents saw a 23.76% rise from 2,551 in June last to 3,157 in June this year.
