35-year-old widow, Muniratu Abdul-Rauf could only look on for doctors to amputate her son’s leg after her efforts to get him swift medical attention failed.
Miss Abdul-Rauf her son, Nuhu Issah’s left leg got fractured whiles playing at home. Four days later, she said she took him to the hospital. Unfortunately, Nuhu had to undergo surgery that very day he was taken to the hospital. Though Abdul-Rauf said she tried to treat her son’s leg at home as first aid, it probably worsened situation.
“When he fell and broke his leg he couldn’t stand so we tied his affected leg. His leg swelled the next day and we took him to a polyclinic where doctors referred us to the 37 Military Hospital. At the Military hospital, he underwent surgery which was unsuccessful so his leg continued to swell.” She told crimecheckghana.
“After his affected leg was discharging a stinking fluid, the doctors told me his leg had to be severed because it is dead. His leg was amputated few days after the first surgery. We went to the hospital on the 1st of July, 2020 and by 23rd the amputation was carried-out.” Munira said.
Madam Abdul-Rauf whose husband died last year December said she has not been able to pay the surgery bill because life has been tough for her after her husband’s death. She said she lives with her brother and his wife and depend on them for food.
“The cost of the surgery was about Five Thousand Ghana Cedis but because of the insurance cover it has been reduced to Four Thousand Two Hundred and Forty Ghana Cedis. The doctors said they are waiting for his wounds to heal after which they will fix a prosthetic leg for him. I plead with Ghanaians to support me take care of my child.” She pleaded.
Crime Check Foundation, CCF gave Munira One Thousand Three Hundred and Thirty-Four Ghana Cedis for her upkeep and to buy medications for her son through two of its group donors, Executive Ladies based in the US and the Pearly Gate Church in France.
