Andrews Khartey, Lawyer for Judith Yaa Kuma, the pregnant lady whose ear was cut off and Crime Check Foundation (CCF) have vowed to mount pressure on the Ghana Police Service to interdict, Inspector Clement Suputour for engaging in such a vicious act.
Mr. Khartey, unhappy about the delay in ensuring punitive measures against Suputour indicated that the act against the young lady, ‘is a serious offense against human rights and an indictment on our criminal justice system,” he told crimecheckghana.org.
The lawyer indicated that since CCF brought the matter to light, it has been long overdue for the Police to take action against Suputour who is still at post and walking free.
“We wrote to the Police on the matter and they said they were doing their internal investigations and since March, they have not come out to tell us the outcome,” the lawyer lamented in an interview.
According to the agitated lawyer, the fight he is willingly leading is to stop ill-treatment from unscrupulous police officers against vulnerable people.
“You mostly hear that people are framed by police officers, assaulted, and forced statements out of them. This is what we want to stop so what we are doing is not for Judith alone. Many individuals are going through the same ill-treatment from the police and if we do not speak against it, it will continue,” the lawyer said in an interview.
The Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng said the ill action by Suputour further dents the image of the Ghana Police Service and defeats the country’s stance as the ‘beacon of democracy and champion of human rights’, he said while indicating that the organization will continue to put a spotlight on breaches to help sanitize the criminal justice system and make it efficient.
In the meantime, Judith Yaa Kuma through Lawyer Andrew Khartey has sued the Ghana Police Service, Attorney General, and Clement Suputour for Ghc 15 million for infringing on her rights, among many other offences.
