Kwasi Abaka, a 32-year-old farmer is serving a one-year jail term at the Winneba Local Prison for abetment of crime.
He said his offence was that he led the sale of some electronic appliances, which he claimed he did not know were stolen items.
Abaka told crimecheckghana.org that the appliances including a home theatre, flat screen television, woofer, and pen drive were given to him by his friend who is the son of a Chief priest at Ajumako Breman Essiam in the Central Region.
He said his friend pressured him to quickly sell off the items to enable him to raise some money to buy Christmas gifts for his children.
“I sold the TV for Ghc 600, the home theatre for Ghc 130, two pen drives for Ghc 70 each, and a Bluetooth player for Ghc 50. I was given only Ghc 100,” he narrated.
Abaka said he was arrested the following day after he had sold the items.
“I was denied police bail but my friend and the buyer were able to pay for their bail,” he recounted.
The father of one was eventually arraigned before the court. In court, he said the prosecutor asked him to plead guilty to abetment of crime which the court had charged him for.
He said the court sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment when he was unable to pay a fine of Ghc 1,800 after he pleaded guilty
Actress cum TV presenter, Nana Ama McBrown paid the fine of Abaka.
Crime Check Foundation through whom the actress made the intervention, facilitated his release when it visited him in prison.
