Veronica Akumbilim, a 25-year-old widow has lost faith in life after the untimely death of her husband, the widow and a mother of a one-year baby boy relies on the benevolence of her aging mother to survive.
According to her, she feeds herself and her baby every week on Twenty Ghana cedis her mother gives her.
‘I used to sell credit cards in traffic to support my husband but after his death, I have used my capital on feeding myself and my son” she said.
Narrating her ordeal, Veronica said “I live in Tema and my husband lived in Takoradi where he worked with Harlequin International, an oil company. We usually talked on the phone early morning and evening after work, on the day he died, I spoke to him and he told me, he was going to get food afterward he would call me, I waited till the next day and he never returned the call”
Veronica’s husband was hit by a car on his way to get food and lost his life on the spot; unfortunately, the driver left his lifeless body and sped off.
According to her, she became anxious the following morning and began calling her husband’s phone.
“I got a call from my husband’s office later in the day, they asked to come and see me and that got me very anxious and curious” she noted
Veronica who could not keep her calm logged onto her husband’s Facebook page and saw that somebody had written ‘Rest in Peace’ on his timeline.
“I couldn’t hold my tears anymore, I cried my heart out,” she said
Finally, the news was broken to her and the company offered to take care of all the funeral expenses
Months after Veronica’s husband has been buried she is left with the sole responsibility of catering for herself and her baby.
