Tropical Cables and Conductors Limited, manufacturers of electrical cables, has donated large quantities of electrical cables worth over GHC 20,000.00 to the Kumasi Central Prisons to support the re-wiring of the facility.
The donation was in response to an appeal by the managers of the prison as they take steps to re-wire it, something that had not been done since it was built more than 100 years ago.
The facility, according to authorities, has been experiencing power supply interruptions and frequent electrical faults.
The situation posed considerable danger to the inmates and therefore needed urgent attention.
Ms. Salomey Baah, a representative of the company, who presented the cables at a brief ceremony, said the donation formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
She said the company could not have turned down the request of the Prisons authorities for assistance to re-wire such an important facility.
“The welfare of the inmates is a collective responsibility of all stakeholders and this is our contribution towards their wellbeing”, she said.
A Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Mr. Samuel Owusu Amponsah, the Ashanti Regional Commander of Prisons received the cables and commended the Company for responding to the appeal
He said electricians of the service after assessing the situation recommended re-wiring of the entire facility.
This, according to him, informed the decision to appeal to the Company.
