A middle-aged-woman, Linda Awuah, is serving 18 months imprisonment after her mother-in-law bought a car for her son with stolen cash she gave her to keep for her.
According to her, her younger sister gave her an amount of Six Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH6,000) to keep for her. She said when she interrogated how she got the money, her sister told her she found it on her way back from school.
Madam Awuah said she gave the money to her mother-in-law because she lived closer to her. She said her mother-in-law after mounting pressure on her to allow her to use the money, bought a taxi for her son to work with. A month later, she said a man came along with two children to her house to ask about the money after he was directed by the kids.
“I admitted the money was with me when he asked me about it. The two children were my little sister’s classmates and according to my sister, her friends gave her the money to hide it for them because the man makes them starve. The man reported the case to the police but it was after a year that I was taken to court.” She told crimecheckghana.
Linda Awuah said she was given the sentence after she couldn’t pay the court fine of One Thousand Six Hundred Ghana Cedis (GHC 1,600). She said the car was also impounded by the court so that they could sell it to pay-off the money.
She said her mother-in-law has been unconcerned about her as she has never visited her and her husband-to-be only went to see her once in prison. “I sold roasted groundnut and maize but I did not take a penny out of the money though I was struggling. My mother is also struggling but instead I gave the money to my in-law. I will never forget the pain you have caused me” She said with pain.
Crime Check Foundation, CCF, has been an advocate of the non-custodial sentence act.
