The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a cache of weapons and ammunition at the Golden Jubilee Terminal at Tema Port.
The seized items include 53 pistols (side arms), 65 rounds of live ammunition, 74 magazines, and a pistol holster.
The suspects connected to the shipment were arrested and handed over to the Marine and Railway Police Station in Tema for further investigation.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, November 20, the Commissioner of Customs, Brigadier Zibrim Ayorrogo, revealed that the items were intercepted on Monday, November 4.
According to him, the 40-foot container, numbered MEDU4496951, had been declared as containing vehicles and personal effects upon its arrival at Tema Port from the United States.
“During a routine examination on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the Golden Jubilee Terminal, Customs officers, in the presence of the declarant/agent and the importer’s representative, uncovered 53 side arms, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition concealed in three suitcases,” Brigadier Ayorrogo stated.
He added that the Customs team promptly alerted the GRA’s Intelligence and Investigations Unit and the Preventive Unit, who confirmed the discovery.
“All firearms, ammunition, and magazines were seized, and the remaining contents of the container were detained for further scrutiny. The agent and the consignee’s representative were subsequently arrested and interrogated,” he explained.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the illegal importation of the weapons.
